I only recently learned about this marvelous and insightful French writer, who was the first woman elected to the Académie française, which occurred in 1980. Suppose my mouth and ears were too long stuffed with Sartre. Alas. Better late than…In Marguerite Yourcenar’s first essay, “Sur quelques lignes de Bede le Venerable,” she discusses the introduction of Christianity into England in the early 7th century. She says that it was some two centuries earlier that the Roman Emperor, Arcadius, withdrew the Roman legions from Britain, and told the inhabitants that they were on their own. Two centuries later, a Christian missionary approached Edwin, the King of Northumberland, purportedly the most powerful ruler in England, with the request that he be allowed to preach Christianity within Edwin’s kingdom. For me, an extraordinary thing then happened. Edwin gathered his religious leaders together, and they essentially agreed that their gods had not been very beneficial lately, so why not try some new ones! Yourcenar says of that moment: “The England of Edwin left the Bronze Age and entered the European community.” I read that passage the day of the Brexit vote, when the UK voted to leave the European community.Most of the other 17 essays display an originality of thought that I found stimulating. For example, there was a lengthy essay on “tone” in the literature of antiquity. We know well, how tone and inflection change the meaning of modern communication, but I had never thought how one should apply the same principles to the language of ancient writings. In the essay that lends its name to this collection, “Le Temps, ce grand sculpteur,” Yourcenar discusses the changes that have been wrought on the sculpture of antiquity, by the meteorological elements as well as by humans. She wisely notes: “Of all the changes wrought by time, none have been greater than the leap in taste of the admirers.”I found impressive a thoughtful essay on Andalusia, which was once called Hesperides, and how that region was a balance and counterweight to Greece, and the enclosed world of the Mediterranean, which had two narrow exits, one to the Atlantic, the other to the Black Sea. An insightful summary of Spanish development: “Ancient Spain, which developed later, ripen only in certain points, precociously dry in others, attained its adventurous destiny only during the Renaissance.”The treatment of animals, and how we obtain our food are the subject in several essays. She rightly denounces Descartes’ mechanistic view of animals, and notes how certain Biblical passages have been used to justify all kinds of cruelty towards animals. She anticipated the work of Michael Pollan, as expressed in The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, when she said, in 1981, concerning the raising of cattle: “…stuffed with hormones which their meat transmits the dangers to us.”In another essay, she discusses Ivan Morris’ work The Nobility of Failure concerning the “lost causes” that are often praised and found worthwhile in Japan. The only fault that I found with this essay was that she did not make a connection between many of the supposedly unique Japanese traits with those Americans who exhibited the same “traits” in regards to the Confederacy, and the lost cause in the American Civil War.Ah, sex. There are a couple thoughtful essays on that delightful subject, including “Sur quelques themes erotiques et mystiques de la Gita-Govinda” which obviously focuses on the practice, as well as myths, regarding sex in India, while contrasting those to the ones in a Western heritage. Likewise, there is a stimulating, as it were, essay on Tantrism yoga, and the process whereby a carnal union can become “sacred.” Hum.I’m sure I’ll be reading more of Yourcenar.
